The Weekend Retreat by Tara Laskowski, 4 Stars

Every year, the illustrious Van Ness siblings, heirs to a copper fortune, gather at their secluded winery estate for a joint birthday celebration. It’s a tradition they’ve followed nearly all their lives, and now they are back with their significant others for a much-needed weekend of rest and relaxation, away from the public spotlight.

With lavish comforts, gorgeous scenery, and indulgent drinking, the trip should be the perfect escape. But it soon becomes clear that even a remote idyllic getaway can’t keep out the problems simmering in each of their lives. As old tensions are reignited, the three couples are pushed to the edge. Will their secrets destroy them, or will they destroy each other first? And who’s been watching them from beyond the vineyard gates?

When a torrential rainstorm hits, plunging them into darkness, the answers prove all too deadly…

My Review:

Lauren is headed to Zach’s home to meet his family for the first time. Under normal circumstances, this would be a stressful situation. But when your boyfriend’s family is one of the richest, privileged “old-money” families in the country, it ups the anty just a little.

As expected, the weekend starts off a little rocky. The family is still reeling from the recent loss of their mother, and everyone seems to have secrets they keep from each other — including Lauren. It all comes together as a recipe for a fantastic read. Really, I couldn’t put this one down!

Lawskowski perfectly imagines the power players in this very wealthy family. There are notes of Succession with many dark twists. Special thanks to Netgalley and Graydon House for an advanced e-galley in exchange for my honest review. This one is out now.
