When I’m Dead by Hannah Morrissey, 3.5 Stars

On a bone-chilling October night, Medical Examiner Rowan Winthorp investigates the death of her daughter’s best friend. Hours later, the tragedy hits even closer to home when she makes a devastating discovery—her daughter, Chloe, is gone. But, not without a trace.

A morbid mosaic of clues forces Rowan and her husband to question how deeply they really knew their daughter. As they work closely to peel back the layers of this case, they begin to unearth disturbing details about Chloe and her secret transgressions…details that threaten to tear them apart.

Amidst the noise of navigating her newfound grief and reconciling the sins of her past, an undeniable fact rings true for Rowan: karma has finally come to collect.

My Review:

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. Their daughter’s best friend is found murdered just down the path to the high school from their house, and their daughter is missing.

At first there’s panic, then as the reality starts to setting in, sometime becomes clear to Rowan. She and her husband haven’t actually been the most present parents. And during the teenage years, that’s a problem. Part of it is their jobs – as the town medical examiner and a cop, they get called out of bed at all hours of the night. But they didn’t realize it was such a problem until it was too late.

Because as it turns out, they don’t know that a lot has changed in their daughter’s life. And not knowing that information is making it harder to figure out where she went and if they’ll ever find her. And unfortunately, it seems that the sins of the parents have fallen on their child.

When I’m Dead is a fantastic page-turner and the deep-seated family drama will keep you guessing until the end. Special thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Minotar Press for an advanced e-galley in exchange for my honest review. This one is available now!
